The church St. Sixtus at lake Schliersee is also known as an architectural pearl. This is one of the most beautiful and appealing houses of worship in the region. The Baroque age building has been built on the ground where the former church dated back from the medieval age stood. Caspar Cläßl was in charge for the construction of the building. The art historical gem has been built with the help of locals between 1712 and 1715.

Johann Baptist Zimmermann, a German artist, designed the ceiling frescos and stucco work. He also created the altar of Mary inside. Hans Zwerger, who already had worked with his brother Jörg at the construction site of the pilgrimage church St. Leonhard in local centre of Fischhausen, took responsibility for the development of the roof truss. The cabinetmaker Blasius Zwink built up the altars, the pulpit and the confessional boxes. He also succeeded in making himself unforgettable, by creating a real masterpiece inside the church - a high altar made out of nut tree wood. This had an illustration of the life and death of the patron saint of the church, Saint Sixtus.

During a visit of this church, you will find lots of other artistic treasures, e.g. a protective coat painting by Jan Pollack, designed in Gothic style, a Mercy Seat from 1490 made by Erasmus Grasser, a sculpture of the enthroned St. Sixtus. This sculpture was created during the transition period of the late Gothic and Renaissance. In the centre of the nave is a luxuriant chandelier, made of metal. This was a present of Prince Arnulf von Wittelsbach.

Next to the church St. Sixtus is the cemetery with the small graveyard chapel St. Nikolaus (=St. Nicholas). It is worth stepping inside, because you will find another sight worth seeing – a winged altar picture of the late Gothic painter Jan Pollack.

After visiting the church St. Sixtus in Schliersee, please do not forget to do a quick side-trip to the cemetery next door. At the entrance you will find the former prebendary house and right next to it the chapel of St. Nicholas.

Originally the St. Nicholas Chapel was a much larger building. During the construction of the St. Sixtus Church during the 18th century the construction workers took some stones of the chapel, because of a lack of building stones. In the end only the Gothic winged altar remained. This masterpiece shows the story of Saint Nicholas of Myra in several paintings.

On the graveyard you can visit the tomb of many famous sons and daughters of the region, e.g. Terofal, Karl Haider, Magdalena Ischick and Konrad Dreher.

Before its time as a normal church, St. Martin was a convent church. The building lies at the town entrance of Schliersee, at the local centre Westenhofen. Its history dates back to the 8th century. During those days the house of God was located at another place - between the local centres of Hausham and Westenhofen.

The site where the church St. Sixtus is located nowadays has been the place where the former monastery was. During the 15th century the  convent has been closed in Schliersee moved to Munich. This took place in the context of the secularisation.

Up to 1884 St. Martin was the parish church of Schliersee. Meanwhile, it is used as chapel by the Catholic parish. The building consists of many parts of different stylistic eras. On the remains of the medieval church a baroque new construction was built between 1743 and 1737. The tower was built during the late Gothic period in 1529. The side altars were put up in 1635 and the inner part of the church building was redesigned in rococo style in 1878.

When entering the altar room, you will immediately see two frescos. These can be dated back to the tome the building was built and are painted with scenes of the legend of St. Martin. Outside, on the graveyard of the church, you can visit the tomb of the famous Poacher Jennerwein. The original grave cross has been made in 1877.

The Catholic chapel and pilgrimage church St. Leonhard Is one of the most beautiful houses of God in the region of Schliersee. This church is part of the local centre of Fischhausen and lies right between Schliersee and Neuhaus.

Unfortunately there is no evidence about the constructor of this chapel. It is assumed that St. Leonhard has been built during 1646 and 1657 by Jörg and Hans Zwerger from Schliersee.

The central building has a stretched octagonal form and rounded edges. On the sides semicircular apsis have been constructed and the lobby of the baroque church is rectangular. The tower and its pointed roof lies on the southern side and has a late Gothic basement. This has been built between 1666 and 1668.

The so called Miesbach-Schliersee. Style is very typical for this region. You will recognise the ornaments, cherubs, rosettes and flower vases at first site, as soon as you have entered the building. These small pieces of artwork have been made by local artists and enhance the appearance of the walls and the ceilings of the chapel. The chapel and the churchyard are surrounded by a wall. The roof is furnished with dark shingles.

Outside the chapel St. Leonhard you can enjoy a breathtaking view. The landscape is unique and even Dominikus Zimmermann, one of the most important German rococo-style constructors was overwhelmed by the panorama of this area. St. Leonhard inspired him. After visiting this place, he started designing the construction plans for the Pilgrimage Church of Wies at the so called  „Pfaffenwinkel“ in Bavaria.

The most beautiful event taking place at the Catholic chapel and pilgrimage church St. Leonhard, is the so called „Leonhardifahrt” (Leonhardi ride) from Schliersee to Fischhausen. This religious parade always takes place on the first Sunday in November. The procession ends with the blessing of horses and horsemen. Many people from all around, even from Austria, decorate their horses, their team of horses and dress up in traditional clothes. The festive procession  commemorating St. Leonhard starts in Schliersee and ends with a mass right in front of the church St. Leonhard. The leonhardiride is one of the oldest traditional Bavarian Christian customs.

The church St. Bernhard is situated right in the middle of the high mountains of the Alps. Not far away is the lake Spitzingsee and the church is framed by huge forests. This Catholic house of prayer is known as the highest located parish churches in Germany. The area around the church and inside the building is a peaceful place to stay and after visiting the church, you can start a hiking tour from here and explore nature.

Alber Obermayer, the local priest wanted to create a space, where locals and visitors can pray and celebrate prayers and church services. Michael von Faulhaber, the Cardinal and Archbishop from Munich and Freising heard of Alber Obermayer´s idea and decided to visit the area around lake Spitzingsee.

He was so stoked of the whole area, that he looked for a building site. He decided on having the church built at the so called Baumoos and bought the property from a local Alpine farmer. Friedrich Haindl, an architect from Munich, got the job for drawing the construction plans of the church.

Despite the political pressure of the National Socialists, the foundation of the building was laid in 1937. All building material of the church were chosen from the direct environment. The Catholic parish and the craftsmen were not allowed to get materials from somewhere else.

The consecration took place on October 23rd 1938. The house of God was dedicated to Saint Bernhard von Menthone. He is the guardian of the Alpine farmers, the Alpinists and skiers.

One of the most beautiful works of art inside the church is right above the high altar. It is a painting of the transfiguration of Christ on the mountain Tabor as well as more scenes of the Book of Revelations. By the way –in 1942 the whole Spitzing-area and also the church St. Bernhard almost would have been lost forever under the waters of the reservoir. Luckily this project failed because of the resistance of the locals, the administrative bodies and World War II.

The „Christuskirche” (=Church of Christ) is a Protestant church which has been designed by Olaf Andreas Gulbransson in 1950. The church architect was the son of Olaf Gulbransson, an artist from Norway, and the novelist Grete Gulbransson. This very special monument has an octagonal shape and the crucifix, which is larger than life-sized, is situated inside the building. Olaf Andreas Gulbransson is known as the originator of the architectural styles of churches in the 1950s and 1960s.

The huge crucifix is something very special. Originally it was a kind of compromise due to financial straits. Olaf Andreas Gulbransson and his wife had the idea for this piece of art. They took some sheets of cauterized brass and copper and fixed them onto a cardboard core.

The makeshift solution should have been replaced by another figurine of Jesus Christ later on, but the church members recognised the artistic value of this piece and decided to keep the crucifix.

The chapel of St. Georg at the vineyard lies on the vineyard hill in Schliersee. In order to get there, just follow the road from the town hall to Hans-Miederer-Straße. Then walk straight ahead, until you reach the chapel. From here you will have a wonderful view around Schliersee, the lake and the mountains.

Georg von Waldeck the Elder had this small Gothic building put up in 1350. The reason for this project was an oath he made, after he was released from Turkish imprisonment. Later, during the 17th century, Ludwig von Maxlrain had the chapel restored. Its remains have been buried inside the crypt of the baroque high altar. Unfortunately the tombstone was so heavy, that the crypt came tumbling down in 1781 and a part of the chapel trappings also were destroyed. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the chapel of St. Georg shined in renewed splendour. Wilhelm Gail, a German architecture painter, restored the high altar with the patron of the chapel – St. Georg. The free-standing presentation of the saint shows him killing a dragon. At the same tome he is framed by a triumphal arch. At the northern wall of the chapel is a picture of St. Sixtus and St. Barbara. Starting on April 23rd, the patrocinium of St. Georg, you can visit the Holy Mass until the end of September. The house of God is used for wedding ceremonies.

The Protestant Church called „Apostel-Petrus-Kirche“  is dedicated to the Apostle Peter and was built in the 1960s in the township Neuhaus at lake Schliersee. The house of prayer is the largest and at the same time the youngest congregation of the four evangelical churches. The laying of the foundation stone took place on July 21st 1963 and the sanctification of the church building on August 16th 1964.

Gustaf Gsaenger, a government-approved master builder had the idea for the shingle roofed house of prayer. He also designed a parish hall and an atrium, which fits perfectly to the surrounding mountains. The altarpiece is a tripartite painting and has been brought into being by Angela Gsaenger, the architects´daughter. In the centre of the painting you can see the Messiah affirmation from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. The day of the Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles have been painted on the left side wing. On the right side, you can see the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem according to Paul, being artistically set in scene. The closed altarpiece shows the capture of Jesus Christ according to the Gospel of Matthew.

The Lutheran parish has a long-standing friendship with the Catholic church and is situated near the parish church St. Josef. Both churches regularly celebrate ecumenical services and events. The  „Eule-Organ” is the musical core of the Apostle church. It is a three-manual instrument and also has chimes and an organ toy stop with ringing bells. Whenever you like, you can attend church or visit one of the concerts inside the church.

The church St. Josef in Neuhaus is a combination of an early Christian hall church with a flat slab and a dominating arch. Daylight and its effect play a huge role inside the church building. The Catholic Church has some wall statuaries standing right above the altars and the pietà. The pietà has been built by the sculptor Siegfried Moroder from South Tyrol. The altar table stands in the centre of the apsis.

The foundation block of the house of God was  laid in 1952. Many people had moved to Neuhaus at lake Schliersee after World War II and this is why a new church had to be built. Friedl Wegmann, an architect from Schliersee had the idea for the building. The church St. Josef was consecrated in 1953. Next to the parish house is the youth club of the archdiocese Munich-Freising, a modern parish centre and a preschool. The schemes for these buildings have been designed by Johannes Wegmann.
